Snowdrops

Looking for some colour in spring? Look no further than the snowdrop.

Given a little care and time, these delicate looking flowers will spread and fill their space with a gorgeous and fragrant carpet of white flowers in spring.

This is a week by week diary of the growing, maintenance and harvesting snowdrops.

Growing diary

I started this diary, and sowed these seeds, at the start of November (45th week of the year).

Sowing

The first step for our diary is to plant our snowdrops seeds into the ground. Choose an area which receives partial shade and where the ground does not get waterlogged easily. I’m going to be planting underneath my tree here, in a sheltered area, down the bottom of the garden.

Bed down the end of the garden

Next, grab yourself a stick or a dibber, if you have one. We’ll be using this to push some holes into the ground to make this process quick and simple. Most seeds and bulbs like to be sown at double their height and on my dibber, thats the second line.

Bed down the end of the garden

Make 5-7 holes in the ground, at your set depth. Apparently, in nature, odd numbers are more pleasing. I don’t know how true that is but I’m going to give it a try here.

Drop a bulb into each hole and give it a gentle poke down to the bottom.

Push bulb into hole

Lastly, cover it back up with some soil.

If the area you’ve chosen is quite dry at this time of the year, give it a good water to pull the soil around the bulbs. If, like me, it’s insert your own “wetter than a…” joke here… in Autumn, you can safely leave them now.

Dormant

The bulbs will now be dormant until the temperature changes enough to encourage them to start growing.

I’ll update this diary when that happens at the end of winter.

If you have any questions or tips about growing snowdrops, please put them in the comments so we can all benefit from your experience.
